Colegio Americano 4th of July Festival

Colegio Americano's Athletic Director, Billy Dwyer, kept the game interesting with his commentary.
Colegio Americano had a 4th of July celebration for its teachers. Every year teachers from the school compete in a softball game against the American Consulate of Guayaquil. The Colegio Americano players weren’t too serious about the game. A couple players who came to the festivities in flip flops played without shoes. You would have thought the game was in the deep south somewhere if it were not for the iguanas sunning themselves in the outfield. Look carefully!

The American Consulate players were a bit more serious. They arrived with equipment bags, cleats, proper clothing, and other assorted pieces of official equipment. Not that Colegio Americano players weren’t thankful for the equipment, because without it the Colegio team would have had to play without gloves as well as shoes.

Well, this year Colegio Americano had a secret weapon – Mike – who played baseball in high school and college. Actually, Mike surprised his own team members with his “hidden” skills. Who would expect a mathematician to be able to play softball? Colegio Americano won this year, and Mike was named “most valuable player” and got to take home the trophy.

The Colegio Americano de Guayaquil Board of Directors funded the 4th of July Celebration. Hamburgers, hot dogs, soft drinks, and beer (it’s a private school campus) were provided for free. A pretty good band sang rock and roll songs (in English) from the 70’s and 80’s. There was a raffle (tickets were free – I think that’s an Ecuadoran concept), and I won about 35 pounds of Kellog’s cereal.

Liam O'Hara organized the event.
