Eggs

Egg Shop in Durán

Eggs are kept on unrefrigerated shelves in the grocery stores, and they’re displayed out in the open in the little shops on the streets. One of my Ecuadoran friends said she keeps her eggs on the countertop in her kitchen. They’re not worried about the eggs spoiling. The eggs are fresh from the farm, and people only buy as many as they will eat in a day or two.

This egg shop is in the city of Durán, which is located just 4 kilometers from Guayaquil across from the Río Guayas. You can buy ten eggs for $1.00 or a cubeta (flat) of 30 eggs for $2.85 - $2.95 depending on size. Codorniz (quail) eggs are also popular in Ecuador. I purchased a cup of 17 quail eggs for $1.00. I haven't decided how to cook them. I guess there are enough for a single serving of scrambled eggs.  One Colegio Americano teacher (Mikie, who is now teaching in Georgia), said she and her husband made deviled quail eggs. Sounds like a bit of work to me!

Kindergarteners' Paintings of Guayaquil and Las Peñas

Guayaquil

Norma Jimenez’s 1st basic (kindergarten) students studied the city of Guayaquil last month during the celebration of the founding of Guayaquil. The students painted pictures of the city and of an area called “Las Peñas.” Las Peñas, the oldest district in Guayaquil, is located on Cerro Santa Ana (Santa Ana Hill) on the banks of the Guayas River.
